about the dictionary

Islovar is a Slovene dictionary of informatics, including short definitions of terms, with grammar and usage labels, English equivalents, usually the American variety.

The dictionary provides a comprehensive vocabulary of informatics terms in Slovene, related to information technology and telecommunications, and specialist areas such as database, user interface, business informatics, object technology, artificial perception, social aspects. Words of general meaning are not included.

Many experts in informatics and linguistics, featuring as editors, consultants, contributors or users, currently update, review and edit the content of the dictionary on-line. Due to the technology, the entries are labeled according to their reliability (predlog = suggested, pregledano = reviewed, strokovno pregledano = professionally advised, urejeno = edited). Finally edited entries include definitions, grammar labels and usage labels.

Terms missing in the dictionary are saved in the collection "nenajdene = not found", so that they can be included later. Definitions and terms are verified against multiple resources.

The users of Islovar have the following options:

  • searching in both directions, from Slovene to English and vice versa
  • using the cross-reference prim. in order to find nearby terms
  • browsing for random terms, new terms and terms of the day
  • linking to other website dictionaries
  • commenting the entries, terms or definitions
  • entering new terms, together with the English translation and optionally a short definition
  • taking part in discussions in the forum
  • opening discussions related to terminological issues.

Islovar is edited by the terminology section of the Slovene Informatics Association. More in History.
